Joseph Jones (6 Sept. 1833-17 Feb. 1896), physician and scientist, was born in Liberty County, Georgia, the son of Charles Colcock Jones, a major planter and prominent minister to the slaves, and his first cousin, Mary Sharpe Jones. Merrick worked as a lawyer in Ohio and Louisiana. He set up his law practice in Clinton, La. in 1838, three years after expressing to his mother that he wished to move to the South because "more money can be made than it is said dull northern men can dream of."
